Overcoming Disability
If you are reading this article chances are you or someone you love wants to learn how to learn about overcoming disability.
I think that the only true disability is a crushed spirit … it doesn’t have hope, it doesn’t see beauty, it no longer has our natural, childlike curiosity and our innate ability to imagine.
If instead, we can bolster a human spirit to keep hope, to see beauty in themselves and others, to be curious and imaginative, then we are truly using our power well. When a spirit has those qualities, we are able to create new realities and new ways of being. ~ Aimee Mullins
Aimee Mullins was born without shinbones, and had both her legs amputated at the knee when she was one year old. In spite of predictions that she would live with limited physical capacity, Aimee learned to walk, and run; eventually competing in the 1996 Paralympics. She has gone on to a career in modelling, acting, and speaking.
This is a great video, full of hope, inspiration, and vision. Well worth watching.
It’s society that disables an individual by not investing in enough creativity to allow for someone to show us the quality that makes them rare and valuable and capable. ~ Aimee Mullins
Some highlights Aimee’s perspective on overcoming disability:
♥ Our language shapes the reality of our existence
♥ We need to redefining disability
♥ We all have something rare, powerful and potent to offer our society
♥ When you recognize adversity as natural, consistent and useful, you will be less burdened by the presence of it
♥ The question is not whether you’re going to meet adversity, it’s how you’re going to meet it
♥ When we have the mindset that there’s something broken we need to fix, it does more harm than the disease itself
♥ Find the opportunity wrapped in your adversity
♥ We need to equip ourselves to adapt to adversity
♥ There is no such thing as normal, only possibility and potency
♥ We all need to be useful; to contribute
♥ All you need is one person to show you the epiphany of your own power
♥ The only true disability is a crushed spirit
